With the sunny day and longer evenings, I’ve been able to get quite a bit of training in. I like to mix it up a bit. So when I want to try something else, I get on bike for a few hours. For me, the key to preparing for a race is variety. I like some change in my routine. The other thing that’s important is a sense of purpose. Having a goal in mind makes it easier to get those shoes on and get out the door. I’m doing all this work for a good reason. Making sure every athlete gets a chance and compete is important. And I feel a sense of enthusiasm for the 10K race I’m entering. I think having a clearly defined purpose, like taking part in a race that raises money for a charity, is important. When you get off track and miss some training or over do it on a Saturday night, it’s that much easier to get back on track. If I were just trying to improve my general fitness levels, I might not feel so focused on my goal. I think that’s true of the way I work, too. I like having clear objectives and I feel great when my clients reach their objectives. For me, it’s not really about competing with people. It’s about achieving new goals.

I have to admit that I’m not a particularly natural athlete. I don’t remember ever coming home with any prizes on school sports’ days. But as the years have gone by, I’ve continued to run, cycle and wind surf. In fact, I won my first prize last year when I competed in a mini-triathalon at my eldest son’s swimming club. I came in third… out of three. But the best thing was taking home my first athletic award.
I don’t find running particularly easy – I’m more of a cyclist and I enjoy coaching football. I’d say I get regular exercise, but I’m not exactly in training at the moment. That’s why this race is going to be so good for me. I’ll get out more and I’ll have training goal. And, I’m raising money that will help para-olympians. They’re inspiring. You can sponsor me here.
That’s enough talk for now. I have to go for a run…
Marketing Zone’s client, Polaroid Eyewear is really standing out from the crowd. Sunglasses and holidays go together like fish and chips, so retail sales in airports are vital to this brand’s success. Through an integrated trade marketing campaign, we first helped Polaroid drive sales from nothing to become a Top 10 brand in major regional airports in the first year. Central to the campaign has been giving sales staff first hand experience of the product. With steady growth through the recession in direct contrast to other brands Polaroid sunglasses have now secured Top 3 position. That’s pretty good progress in just a few years.
Marketing Zone have been helping local work placement student Amy Hardy get creative. Amy landed a project to shoot pictures for the Polaroid website, and we were delighted to give her the opportunity to build up her portfolio of work.
As part of the photoshoot, Amy found herself on a £500,000 yacht. “It was such a thrill for me,” said Amy. “One day I was at university in Hatfield as normal – and the next I was on location assisting a professional photographer, matching beautiful sunglasses to glamorous models for a prestigious client – and seeing how things are done in the real world!”
The work experience scheme really helps students. Graduates starting out in these difficult times often have no work experience, and just a few weeks with a company can provide them with an insight into their chosen careers, and experience they can talk about at interviews. Top marks all round!
